Date: 30 May 2025

Join in on this half-day “unconference” and book launch exploring media capture across Africa and Latin America, organised by the Sociological & Cultural Studies group and Glasgow University Media Group in partnership with the Glasgow Latin American Research Network. This hybrid event marks the launch of the forthcoming book Media Capture in Africa and Latin America: Power & Resistance and brings together researchers, journalists, and civil society actors to discuss emerging patterns of media control and grassroots resistance in the Global South.

Short proposals (max 50 words) are invited for 5-minute presentations related to topics, such as:

  • Defining and contesting “media capture” in the Global South
  • AI, algorithms, and Big Tech as tools of media control
  • Misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech in African and Latin American contexts
  • Resistance movements, independent journalism, and digital counter strategies
  • The role of media capture in shaping sustainable development goals
  • Transnational responses: global platforms, civil society and journalist-led interventions

Submit proposals here and expect notifications of acceptance on 15th April 2025.

This event offers a rare opportunity to critically examine the evolving forces of media control and to spotlight resilient forms of resistance shaping more just and independent media futures in the Global South.
