In 2024, South Africa celebrated 100 years of regular radio broadcasting, a milestone that invites us to reflect not only on its storied past but also on what the next century may bring. From its roots in early amateur experiments to today’s digitally integrated platforms, radio has remained a resilient and evolving medium.

This book project invites scholars, media researchers and analysts to imagine the next 100 years of radio broadcasting in South Africa through explorations and investigations of themes such as but are not limited to the following areas of study:

  • Radio and artificial intelligence 
  • The place of radio in converged media platforms 
  • The past, the present and the future of radio in South Africa 
  • Tensions between community, commercial and public radio broadcasting in South Africa and the future of the three-tier radio broadcasting system 
  • Community radio then and now 
  • Radio and propaganda: then, now and the future 
  • Radio and the love movement in South Africa 
  • Commercial radio then, now and in the future
  • Public radio then, now and in the future 
  • Radio and African traditions 
  • African language Radio and the future of trans-languaging
  • Will the radio die? Can radio die?  
  • The intersection of radio and social media platforms 
  • Lessons from the radio archive and the future 
  • Radio and traditions 
  • Radio and storytelling and the future

The book project will welcome any other theme that relates to the future of South African radio broadcasting practices in the next hundred years.

  • Chapter draft (6500-8000 words) deadline 15 October 2025
