Franz Krüger is Associate Professor in journalism at the NLA Høgskolen in Norway, associate researcher with the Wits Centre for Journalism in Johannesburg and Deputy Press Ombud with the SA Press Council.
He worked in professional journalism for many decades, including in the anti-apartheid alternative media and as senior member of the first post-apartheid editorial management team at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. He was founding director of the Wits Radio Academy as well as head of Wits Journalism.
Krüger is the author of Black, white and grey: Ethics in South African journalism (2004), The radio journalism toolkit (2006), co-author of The healthy community radio station (2013) and has written many scholarly articles, book chapters, policy papers and other articles.
With an MA from City University, London, and a PhD in journalism ethics from Wits University, his research interests include community media, sustainability, journalism ethics and journalism education. In 2023, he was elected founding president of the African Journalism Educators’ Network (Ajen).

Nancy Booker is an Associate Professor and Dean at the Graduate School of Media and Communications at The Aga Khan University in Nairobi Kenya. She has served as member of the Media Complaints Commission (2020 – 2023) in Kenya where, as a Certified Professional Mediator, she mediated and adjudicated on media
related disputes.
Prior to joining Aga Khan University, Nancy worked at Multimedia University of Kenya as the Head of the Journalism and
Communication Department and at Daystar University in Kenya. She also worked at ABC University in post-war Liberia where she set up the Department of Media and Communication.
She has been trained in the art of leadership development at Harvard. Nancy is actively involved in the media and communications landscape in the region and beyond and continues to serve in various professional bodies and boards. She was recently appointed as Non-Executive Director on the Nation Media Group Board – the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa. She is the Vice
President of the African Journalism Education Network (AJEN); a member of the Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) where she has served in various committees; a board member in the East Africa Communication Association (EACA) and a member of the
International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR). Nancy is also a member of the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK). She has also been a juror for several journalism excellence awards across the continent. Her most recent juror activity saw her judge the 2023 and 2024 Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Local Journalism Awards for Sub-Saharan Africa.
Her research interests are in health and environment communication, sustainable journalism practice, training and
education, gender and media and media leadership. She has published in these areas. Nancy is a regular commentator in media.
For more than 7 years, Nancy was one of the juror members for the Great Debators Contest television show where she was involved in developing the leadership, critical thinking and presentation skills of
high school students in Kenya. She was also a resident panelist for the weekly media review show, The Newsroom, that aired on Kenya Television Network. She has also had a column in the Standard Newspaper where she wrote extensively about media.
Nancy has been involved in developing curricula for various journalism schools and other organizations. Some notable ones
include developing a training curriculum for the Nation Media Lab for journalists hired by NMG, and a human rights journalism curriculum for Journalists for Human Rights. She is currently leading a project dubbed Advancing Gender Equality in Media and Civil Society Organizations (AGEMCS) that is supporting the establishment of gender desks in two media houses in East Africa; conducting research
on the state of women in the media in East Africa and training and capacity building for media, civil society and other professionals that are keen on gender responsive communication. Sisanda Nkoala in Rhetoric Studies from the University of Cape Town, serves as Associate Professor at the University of the Western Cape where she lectures media and communication courses in the Linguistics Department. Actively engaged in various professional capacities, she holds key positions including Vice President of the South African Communication Association (SACOMM), Secretary General of AJEN, and Vice Chair of the Media Education Research stream for IAMCR. Additionally, she is a public representative on the South African Press Council and serves on the Appeals Tribunal of the South African Film and Publication Board. She formerly served as a board trustee for Brand South Africa.
Her research and teaching are focused on media rhetoric and language persuasion within the South African and broader African context, garnering accolades such as the 2023 National Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences Digital Humanities Award and the 2023 Best Archival Researcher Award. In 2022 she was recognised as a 2022 Open Education Resource Champion by the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources. She she also received the inaugural HERS-SA Young Woman Leader in Higher Education award in 2023.
Her research contributions are showcased in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences, with editorial roles in prominent journals including the Journal of Communication Technology. She has published two edited volumes on South African radio history and its future. Before academia, she was an award-winning journalist with the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

She has dedicated herself to nurturing the next generation of journalists, imparting both theoretical insights and practical skills essential for navigating the rapidly evolving media landscape. Her teaching portfolio encompasses multimedia and digital journalism, reflecting her deep understanding of

Prof Modestus Fosu is Associate Professor in Language and Communication Studies at the University of Media, Arts and Communication, Institution of Journalism (UniMAC, IJ) in Accra, Ghana. His research interests cut across media, political participation, and development; language and the media; Indigenous language media; communication and ethics; readability and comprehensibility of media texts; and general human communication.
Fosu holds a PhD in Media and Communication from the University of Leeds, UK, and has been teaching courses across undergraduate and graduate levels at UniMAC. He has supervised over 40 postgraduate theses and examined over 50 such theses as an internal or external examiner. He was the immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Communication Sciences at UniMAC, IJ. He has also held various management and administrative positions, including being Acting Rector at UniMAC, IJ.
As a researcher, Fosu has undertaken research projects, which have been published in reputable local and international journals and books. He has also participated in conferences locally and abroad and presented papers and/or chaired panels. He has been a regular participant at various forums organised by the Chinese Academy of the Social Sciences (CASS), where he has always contributed to discussions about the progressive partnership between China and the rest of the world.
Fosu’s current research focus is on Indigenous language radio (journalism) in Ghana, striving to describe and theorise the burgeoning field. He values the ideals of teamwork and has been collaborating with other like-minded researchers on the continent in research projects.
Fosu has played various roles in supporting initiatives and projects by UNESCO, UNDP, Ajen, etc. aimed at the development of journalism education, training, and practice in Africa. He is a trainer in media and journalism and has successfully led or facilitated in-service training workshops to build the capacity of practising journalists and other public communicators. Fosu is a member of Ajen and has been elected to serve on the Ajen Board.

Prof. Margaret Jjuuko is a professor of Journalism, Media and Communication with the School of Journalism and Communication, University of Rwanda (UR), Huye Campus. She is the coordinator of the MA programme in Media and Communication studies at and Principal investigator for the NORHED funded project: Preparing practitioners for a
resilient media in Eastern Africa (Rwanda). She is the President of the East African
Communication Association (EACA).
Margaret holds a PhD and Masters of Arts degrees in Journalism and Media Studies from Rhodes University, South Africa; a Bachelor of Mass Communication degree (Honors), Makerere University, Uganda; a Post-graduate Diploma in Television Production for Education and Development, BBC Open University, UK; a Certificate in University Teaching from Carleton University, Canada; a Certificate in postgraduate supervision (PhD and
Masters) Stellenbosch University, SA; a Training of Trainers Certificate (Radio and TV Production), Radio Netherlands Training Centre, Holland, and several other professional training.
As an International Media and Communication Consultant, Margaret contributed to the development of the media in Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan. She was behind the setting up
of the Media Development Institute in South Sudan (2013 – 2015), under a co-funded project by the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), Fojo Media Institute of Sweden, International Media Support (MIS) and the Association of Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS). Prior that (during her tenure at Makerere University in Uganda: 1999 – 2006), Prof. Jjuuko was part of the Sida funded Environmental Journalism and Communication project that sought to address the challenges of environmental degradation in five East African countries (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi) – through training of environmental journalists and
communicators, community outreach clinics and applied research. This work escalated into her doctoral research that investigated media’s framing of the environmental crises on Lake Victoria, Uganda, and their negotiation by the lakeside communities (2008 – 2012).
Jjuuko’s teaching and research experience are broadly in Journalism, Media and Communication studies (both theory and practice), where she researches media textual production and reception processes in development contexts, with a focus on environment and climate change, political communication and social justice in relation to gender, children’s rights, and other minority groups, as well as the issues related to information and communication technologies (ICTs), media education and ethics.

Christina Chan-Meetoo is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication and Head of the Mediacom Studio which she has set up under the aegis of the UNESCO agency IPDC at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Mauritius. She spearheaded the introduction of the first undergraduate degrees in communication and journalism and the first postgraduate diploma in journalism at the university. She is also the Co-Coordinator of the Theatre, Film and Performing Arts Lab of the university.
She has published on press freedom and media regulation, new media and gender-sensitive reporting. She is the editor of ‘Kaya ant sime lamizer ek sime lalimier’ (2020) in Mauritian Creole and of ‘Media Ethics and Regulation: Insights from Africa’ (2013) as well as ‘Enhancing Democratic Systems: The Media in Mauritius’ (2011), in which she contributed multiple chapters.
She has also contributed to the books: ‘Women in the Making of Mauritian History’ (2023), ‘Démocratisation de la démocratie. Mouvements sociaux, institutionnalisations citoyennes et mobilisations numériques’ (2023), ‘The Gender Divides of the Mauritian Society: Re-appropriating the Citizenship and Empowerment Discourse’ (2020) and ‘The Mauritian Paradox: Fifty years of Development, Diversity and Democracy’ (2018).
She is a scientific collaborator on the Mauritian Creole Dictionary Diksioner Morisien (2019) and the Rodriguan Creole Dictionary Diksioner Kreol Rodrige (2021) and is a member of the Creole Speaking Union, for which she is Vice-Treasurer. She is part of the national research team working on the introduction of the use of Creole using the official orthography in public institutions such as Parliament.
She has been nominated to the International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP) by the US Embassy of Mauritius in 2011. With her husband Avinash, she co-created the website www.electionsmauritius.com/ to publish data about elections in Mauritius. She also blogs at www.christinameetoo.com
