Date: 12 September 2025
Rhodes University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies will host an intensive post-conference workshop for 20 participants, focusing on digital and computational tools for media research. Co-hosted by Drs Alette Schoon and Thandeka Bukula, the workshop will provide hands-on demonstrations and practical exercises designed to help participants explore real-world research questions using modern media research technologies.
Workshop Highlights:
Participants will have the opportunity to learn and practice with a range of tools, including:
-
Webscraper Plugin: Scrape data from websites for research purposes
-
ChatGPT & Google Colab: Write code to clean and prepare scraped data for visualisation
-
Voyant Tools: Perform textual analysis and create visualisations such as word clouds
-
Civic Signal: Construct prompts for comparative analysis of online news in Africa
-
Orange Data Mining: Analyse text and visual data using machine learning techniques
The workshop follows the DigiMethods Africa hands-on methodology, which encourages researchers to actively explore and test authentic research questions. While previous DigiMethods Africa courses have spanned multiple days, this year’s compressed format offers a concise overview of tools while still providing participants with real data to experiment with.
