The Highway Africa (HA) summit is set to return after a “short hiatus to take a deep dive into the future of African media and journalism, which have been severely disrupted by a variety of local and international challenges”, including the increasing domination of the industry by the global technological platforms.
Dubbed Africa’s biggest conference for journalists, media scholars and NGOs working in the media, the summit will take place virtually between 21-23 June this year.
A line-up of top world-class speakers will lead high-level and cross-cutting debates that will seek to offer practical and workable initiatives that media and journalism could take on board to try to reverse an unprecedented slide in their economic and financial fortunes, said conference organiser Mbali Buthelezi.
Buthelezi said the speakers had been drawn from a variety of academic disciplines and media experts who daily “trouble-shoot on the ground to seek innovative solutions – some of which fail while others succeed – to an industry that is staring an existential crisis”. They include Vice Chancellor of the University of Pretoria, Prof Tawane Kupe, and several local and international journalists and media scholars
