EVENT: Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute
The 2025 Oxford Media Policy Summer Institute on 28 July – 8 August 2025 at Jesus College, Oxford comes at a critical moment. Today’s international system faces unprecedented challenges including fragmentation and new modes of ordering with significant implications for media and communications technologies. The future of media development is uncertain, fact-checking and content moderation efforts are being undermined and inequalities are deepening. This two-week programme will bring together experts, policymakers and researchers from around the world, including a strong emphasis on perspectives from the Global South to debate urgent issues in media policy.
EVENT: Young Women Leaders in News Media Seminar
The media industry is a dynamic and influential field that plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion and discourse. However, women continue to face challenges in accessing leadership roles and opportunities within this sector. This seminar aims to empower aspiring early-career women media professionals by connecting them with experienced mentors who can provide guidance, support and inspiration. Central to this initiative is identifying young women with a passion for leading within news media contexts and fostering a strong sense of ambition and self-belief so that as they grow in their careers, they do so with the skills, confidence, and network necessary to assume leadership positions.
Ajen Symposium on Campus Media
The African Journalism Education Network will host an online symposium on campus media governance and sustainability on 27 March 2025. The event, which will explore critical issues shaping student-run media with contributions from leading educators, media practitioners and researchers, will examine governance models, financial strategies and the evolving role of campus media in Africa.
IPIE to launch scientific panel on AI impact on economic development
The International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) will host the AI Action Summit in Paris in February 2025, launching a new panel to study AI’s impact on economic development and inclusion. The summit’s theme, “public interest AI,” highlights how AI is reshaping global access to financial services, banking, housing, and employment opportunities.
Ethiopia to host the 15th EACA conference
The 15th East African Communication Association (EACA) conference will take place from August 27–29 2025, at Addis Ababa University’s School of Journalism and Communication in Ethiopia. Centered on the theme ‘Media and Communication in Africa’s Integration’, the conference aims to foster a mature, robust, and professional media and communication ecosystem across the continent.

Evolving trends in internet and media technologies have continued to transform viewing habits at an alarming rate. With the over-the-top (OTT) and video-on-demand (VOD) services audiences can choose what they want to watch and when they want to watch it using any internet-enabled device whether it’s a smartphone, tablet, PC, or smart TV. Research indicates that streaming subscriptions have increased significantly over the past few years. However, this has significant implications for the broadcasting industry at operational and policy levels.
